51 Gigapixels reveal the true scale of the Great Wall
Our first attempt to photograph the Great Wall in Beijing was in late autumn 2017. We had hoped to capture the spectacular red leaves around Fragrant Hills as well, but arrived too late for the best moment. Those original images are still stored away. So we returned to Beijing in the summer of 2018 — this time for one purpose: to document one of the most powerful symbols of Chinese civilization, the Great Wall, and one of its best-preserved and most representative sections, Badaling.
In 360 degrees, the wall follows the ridges to the horizon
The panorama was captured from a watchtower on Badaling’s southern section and presented as a 360-degree ultra-high-resolution image. The wall rises, falls, bends and climbs with the terrain before disappearing into the distant mountains. A gray line traces the ridges, tightening and stretching with the land, binding the fortifications to the Yanshan terrain as a single form.
Zoom in, and the Great Wall becomes more than a wall
Start close in the frame and you can see visitors gathering around the famous “He Who Has Never Been to the Great Wall Is Not a True Man” inscription, raising their phones for photographs. Farther along, another group queues near the stone plaque bearing the characters “Badaling.” Look toward the distant ridge and North Tower Eight comes into view — the highest watchtower in the Badaling section. At maximum zoom, the visitors on top are no longer anonymous dots; their movements, gestures and raised arms begin to emerge.
3,613 photographs become one mountain-wide image
The panorama was captured with a Canon EOS 5DS R and telephoto lenses, scanning the view frame by frame. The 3,613 photographs were not simply stitched together as a single batch; each frame became one piece of the final panorama. Back in Shanghai, the team spent roughly three weeks on color correction, stitching, seam repair, detail restoration and interactive development, turning the original photographs into a 51-gigapixel image designed for continuous online exploration.
Why the Great Wall feels like a backbone
Push the view farther into the distance and the wall gradually stops looking like a building and starts becoming part of the landscape itself. The gray line climbs one ridge, disappears behind another, then reappears farther away, like a giant dragon resting across the mountains. Up close there are bricks, watchtowers and visitors; farther away there is only a thin gray line following the terrain. Moving between these scales is what makes the idea of the “Great Wall” feel tangible.
A few surprising facts behind the wall
The brick-and-stone walls most familiar to us largely reflect the Ming-era construction tradition, but walls from different periods and regions were built from very different materials. In the dry northwest, earlier sections made extensive use of rammed earth, reeds, tamarisk and compacted sand. Another enduring misconception is that the Great Wall can easily be seen with the naked eye from space. In reality, the wall is relatively narrow, making it extremely difficult to identify directly at orbital distances without optical assistance.
From one brick to two thousand years of history
Pull the view back and the Great Wall stretches along the ridges toward the horizon. Zoom in again and you return to individual bricks, watchtowers and visitors stopping to catch their breath, take photographs and celebrate reaching the wall. What generations built piece by piece has become a vast record of history, geography and human endurance. It lies quietly across the mountains, needing no explanation. Moving through this 51-gigapixel panorama, the meaning of the Great Wall as a “backbone” begins to feel remarkably clear.
