Chongqing only reveals itself when you zoom in

Standing on the rooftop helipad of United International Building, I finally understood why Chongqing is often called China's '8D city.' There is no flat ground, no predictable street grid. Two great rivers meet below, skyscrapers climb steep hillsides, bridges leap across valleys, and metro lines disappear directly through residential buildings. The city seems to have grown naturally from the mountains themselves.

In June 2018, invited by Chongqing Evening News, our team came to create a gigapixel portrait of the city. The greatest challenge was never photography—it was the weather. Chongqing is famous for fog, humidity and hazy skies, conditions that make long-distance photography almost impossible. After carefully watching satellite forecasts, we saw a rare week of clear weather and immediately flew from Shanghai.

Everything went better than expected. Local staff brought us onto one of Yuzhong Peninsula's highest vantage points at the time. The sky was perfectly clear, with exceptional visibility that even locals described as a rare gift. Many residents reportedly left work early simply to enjoy the sunshine.

Rather than rushing, we slowed down. Good weather deserved careful work. Over six hours we completed four panoramic matrices, capturing 4,813 photographs from every direction. Back in Shanghai, weeks of color correction, stitching, retouching and software development transformed those images into the 54-gigapixel panorama you see today.

A city that tells stories through details

Zoom toward Chaotianmen and you'll notice Raffles City still unfinished: its towers already rose high, but the signature skybridge had not yet taken shape — years before it became Chongqing's iconic skyline. Along the Jialing River sits the Chongqing Grand Theatre, resembling a white sailing ship anchored beside the waterfront.

Keep exploring and you'll discover Hongyadong clinging dramatically to the cliffside, cable cars gliding across the Yangtze River, the famous Changjiang International Building, and countless bridges, elevators and hillside walkways connecting different elevations. Every zoom level reveals another layer of this extraordinary city.

A city that grew with the landscape

Chongqing was never forced onto the land—it grew from it. Locals rarely give directions using north or south; instead they say 'go uphill' or 'downhill.' Old teahouses, hotpot restaurants and traditional street life continue alongside futuristic skyscrapers. Nothing here feels completely old or completely new.

Today Chongqing has become one of China's most recognizable cities for international visitors. Many describe it as cyberpunk, but its character comes not from neon lights alone. It comes from mountains, rivers, bridges and architecture adapting to impossible terrain. From this rooftop, and especially through the power of gigapixel photography, you begin to understand why no other city in the world quite feels like Chongqing.
